Public Relations Writing

"The public is the only critic whose opinion is worth anything at all." Mark Twain

Greetings!  I am a senior at Georgia Southern University majoring in Public Relations.  This blog is part of my public relations writing class.

To begin, here are a few tidbits of information about me.  I actually started college at the University of Georgia following my high school graduation from Glynn Academy in 1978, but during my sophomore year there, I married and moved to Swainsboro.  My first son was born in 1983, followed by my middle son  in 1988 and my youngest in 1990.  My life was so busy being a wife, mom and also working full-time during those years, so I didn’t return to complete my bachelor’s degree until after my youngest son entered high school.  It has been a difficult and challenging journey as a non-traditional student who is now also a single parent, but I wouldn’t trade my life experiences for anything.  Determination, perserverance and hard work are leading me to the attainment of my long-awaited degree!  As Booker T. Washington said, “You measure the size of the accomplishment by the obstacles you had to overcome to reach your goals.”  Receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations will be a monumental accomplishment and everyone will be  invited to my graduation celebration!

I have been employed at East Georgia College in Swainsboro, Georgia, a two-year unit of the University System of Georgia, since 2001.  I have been Director of Marketing and Community Relations since 2008; prior to that I was Director of Human Resources.  Due to some wonderful work experience, professional development opportunities, and mentoring from senior management along the way, I have enjoyed two rewarding and completely diverse careers.  Especially now, I am fortunate to be in a position I love that allows me a lot of creative freedom and expression.

I am an only child, but I have three wonderful sons – my oldest son, Justen , graduated from the University of Georgia and is married to Kimberly; they have a beautiful daughter, Caroline, who was born on 2/23/09.  I am her “Nor ma-ma! ” (Justen, by the way, was a principal player as young Tom Wingo in the movie “The Prince of Tides” starring Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte; Nolte was the adult Tom Wingo. What an experience!) My middle son, Chandler, lives and works in Athens and has transferred to Gainesville State College; he is my artist, songwriter and musician!  My youngest son, Elliott, is a sophomore at Georgia Southern University majoring in Economics; he will be the business entrepreneur of our family!  I love animals and also have a mixed-breed dog, Boomer, who is a great watchdog.

Having two sons in college, I also work part-time as a hostess and cashier at McKinney’s Pond Restaurant near Midville, Ga. on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening.  I don’t consider it “work” because it is also a social outlet for me since I get to see so many folks on a regular basis.  It is owned by Harry “Mutt” Kennedy whose uncles, J.J. and Perry Kennedy,  founded it in 1939.  McKinney’s (named after the 165 acre spring-fed McKinney Pond adjacent to it) is the oldest restaurant in Emanuel county and is famous for its hand-cut steaks and seafood.  I am a third-generation native of St. Simons Island, GA, and our fried shrimp at “the Pond” beat any I’ve tasted on the coast!

Over the years, various quotes have provided inspiration for me.  Here are a few more of my favorites:

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” (Lao Tzu)

“Sometimes in the winds of change, we find our true direction.” (Unknown)

“Loss creates space and emptiness brings possibility.” (Unknown)

This is my first time as a blogger and I am looking forward to the experience!
